The opportunity
came in 1977, on a visit to the USA when he was able to procure the copyright
from Maranatha
Music, near Los Angeles in California. With a donation of Rupees 700 from a
Nigerian, he began the music company, on a very small scale.
The company was
originally named “Good News For All”, which is the name of a weekly Christian
Broadcast over the Indian airwaves. Being very involved in this radio broadcast
in which his brother Joshua Daniel was the speaker, the two were
run in parallel.
The spiritual
vision was the main motivation to the team of “Good News for All”. Volunteers
and Bible School students from the Laymen’s
Evangelial Fellowship, chipped in and dedicated their time and
service. Each working day began with prayer, which was always a priority for
Francis.
As time went by there was gradual and
consistent progress. Francis adopted, the “One step at a time” policy, and
always used a cautious approach. The market slowly opened up and there were new
companies to represent and more titles. There ware a few threats as highly
commercial companies came into the Christian music market but GNFA managed to
outlast all their competition.
The areas of
ministry expanded for Francis, there were changes to GNFA. In 1982, he went
into full time pastoral ministry and moved to Bangalore with his wife Shanthi and his three
children Marcus, Marcelle, and Caleb. He made frequent visits to Madras and gave more responsibility to the
team there. More and more of the
production and printing began to also move to Bangalore.
Going on frequent preaching and song leading tours helped him to also
find partners to support him in distribution of the music all over India.
In 2000 “Good News For All” changed to “Good Music For All”.
Having been a department of the church, it was re-registered as an independent
company. There were a few financial
aspects that made it difficult for the church. Firstly, some Indian churches,
which received large donations from overseas, were incurring the reprisal of the
Tax Office. The large amount of product warehousing, inside the church
property, posed a threat. Secondly, The increasing foreign exchange
transactions, particularly in regard to royalty payments, required complicated
accounting processes. Re-registering from a charity to a business relieved the
church, and smoothened the legal aspects of running “Good Music For All”.
A sad an unexpected change turn was in store for Good Music
For All.
On January 2002, Francis was diagnosed with Terminal Cancer.
During this time, GMFA was unsupervised and began a steady decline. Even in his
sickness, Francis frequently expressed his concern for the company. Requiring
frequent doses of chemotherapy, Francis gradually declined in health and went
to be with the Lord on August 9th,
2002.
St. Johns church in
Bangalore was
generously provided for the funeral, and it couldn’t contain the people who
came. There were also many orders for video recordings of the funeral. Francis
oldest son, Marcus, in his tribute, stated that he and the rest of the family
would continue the work that his father began.
Marcus, in wanting to fulfill his Father wish of moving the
company to Bangalore, took the
step with God’s provision of a good Office and Warehouse. On Feb 4th, 2003, Francis’
Birth Anniversary, the new facility was dedicated to the Lord. He then took on
the challenge of overcoming the decline of the previous year. He firmly
believes that “Good Music For All” is on the launching pad, to continue and
further his father’s vision of having good Christian Music filling the need and
blessing many homes and individuals across India and the world. |
